Lyrics to CD "Overneath".

See Thru Blue - Daire Bracken

Such a bloody disgrace, you keep hiding your face, afraid it might show through.
Can't see through, blue.
Life's meaning's misplaced, deep within your own space,
Let me in too.

Chorus
I can see from where you are, I'm your witness, you're my star
Up above shining bright, how is it you feel so shite.

Tears ripple clear water, reflects beauty distorted, surface deep it's not even true.
Can't see through, blue.
Lost grip with the border, volumes flowing all over,
Please keep afloat.

Chorus
Pull away, your pupil's vacuum has no shore.
You couldn't care less, I couldn't care more.

You conceal it with grace, but that won't help displace, the weight that's killing you.
Can't see through, blue.
Don't have your mother's black lace, suck the light from this place,
Please see it through.

Chorus

Author's Note:

The Celtic Tiger may have left some people behind and created some new fat cats but for most it means working ridiculously hard to feed the tiger. This can stretch beyond what is humanly possible and result in problems like stress and depression. Modern Ireland may have new found comforts and money but at what price, our best people and loved ones may end up exploited to the detriment of their health.

Overneath the Moon - Daire Bracken

Ever have days like this
when you go running 'round in circles to no avail
Still you try
To open a can of piss on what's all been done before

Ever go down a road
that winds and turns and ends up leading nowhere
Still you run
Into a wall of bricks which leaves you lying on the floor

Chorus
On the floor is how I'd always spend my days
On the floor, only for you
Who keeps me overneath the moon
Clogged with stones and sticks,
clock ticks, you can't see light in this dark tunnel
A dark walk
With clumsy feet can leave you lying on the floor

Yet no narcotic fix
can hold you tight when days have lost their grip
But your strong hands
Pick me up when I'm lying on the floor

Chorus
And if you don't mind finding the time to smile it won't go amiss
And then we both know it's this that grounds us
And if you don't mind finding the time to smile it won't go amiss
although we both know

Ever have days like this
when you go running 'round in circles to no avail
Still you run
Into a wall of bricks which leaves you lying on the floor

Author's Note

I recorded this song for my father with the rest of the Brackens as a Christmas present a few years ago, it somehow found its way onto this CD.

Just So Far Away - Mick Broderick

Flung into the open. Like a seed on a castle floor.
I'm pushing up. But someone's pushing down.
Can see a foot behind the door.
I'm not looking for a favour. I'm just trying to make it pay.
And everything that's just so close is just so far away.

Playing in the suburbs. Made of concrete made to pound.
Tearing down the things that last.
Leave 'em buried without a sound.
I'm not here to look for anyone. I'm just trying to find a way.
And everything that's just so close is just so far away.

Riding on a Blackhorse. Doing what I should.
Swinging up to Clonard Road.
Across to the Hunter's wood.
Not here to make companions. Not made 'em anyway.
And everything that's just so close is just so far away.

Checking in the paper. Staying sharp and biding time.
With markers laid & bribes all paid.
I'm sticking to one line.
I'm not looking for a quick fix. I'm just a river to the bay.
And everything that's just so close is just so far away.

Breaking up the city. Breaking all around.
People scrambling to the roofs.
Scrambling to be found.
Not looking for an answer; not looking for a place to pray.
And everything that's just so close is just so far away.

Restless with the present. No respite from the past.
Alive but not yet living.
Going nowhere fast.
Eyes closed but not yet sleeping. Between both night and day.
And everything that's just so close is just so far away.

Shooting Star - Andrew Murray

Strange days these, another beer please,
Give me two, one for me one for you,
I won't forget the night we met
The sky was dark and I saw a shooting star.

Catching random conversations
My mind half blown with expectation,
There's magic around that came out of the ground
Left my eyes half closed but I saw a shooting star.

Chorus
You're in my head in my heart in my soul
You're my equator, my north and South Pole
You're the sun that warms me, the wind that chills me
You're my shooting star, babe, and you always will be.

Music playing, what's he saying
It's philosophy, in the wash of sea
It's the wild, wild, west; it's a hell of a test,
Had my head in the sand but I saw a shooting star.

Fate, you see, is half of me
And the other two thirds is for the birds
Wonder and awe at the hands I draw
Five aces babe, cause I saw a shooting star.

Light is crawling up the sky
And you are sleeping by my side
With my arms around you
I know it came true
That wish I made when I saw a shooting star

Chorus

Strut to Spanish Point - Daire Bracken

Orange and blue have never looked so true
as silhouette against this night time
It's moments like this help you follow it through
cos it's once in a lifetime
When nothing's going wrong

It seemed to slip in without the pain of relief
the trust of a Jesuit
Let my head cut the clouds although I'm run off my feet
and the air fills my head with
Nothing that is wrong

And the road rolls under my feet
as the stars hold me in my place
As I strut to Spanish Point

Hear the sea crash the rocks grating all in its way
like the crush of the People's
All senses engulfed as I breathe in the spray
my mind drifts and recalls
Days that have all gone

As the coast it draws near the sight draws a tear
such beauty's a mismatch
Shimmering light, smooth stones so sheer
take this body and dispatch
Where nothing can go wrong

Still the road rolls under my feet
as the stars hold me in my place
And I strut to Spanish Point

Ar Siúl go Rinn Spáinneach - Daire ó Breacáin
Daire's translation of Strut to Spanish Point available on "Ceol '08" CD

Tré scáth na hoíche 'sea's áille an spéar
Íomhá ildaite
Mo chrá líonta le cúis soiléar
Glac uile 'tá caite
Gach fadbh, gach stró, 's mé saor

Ar shlí fírinne a shiúlaim go samhain
Le muinín Íosanach
Lán dóchas aigne áit díomá an-domhan
Aistir mín fánach
Gan fadhb, gan stró, 's mé saor

Taca ó na réalt
Is an domhan ag rothlú leis
Ar siúl go Rinn Spáinneach

Cloisim pianta ag sceith ó thonn' farraige
Ar nós trírín Uí Dhuibhne
'Sé cumhacht an uisce ag creim' carraige
'S ag múscailt mo chuimhne
Gan fadhb, gan stró, 'sé saor

I scáil oíche feicim áil 's gráinne'
Ionadh anocht agus báisteach inné
Trá sínte thar rinn na Spáinne
Glac mo chorp is fág áit mé
Gan fadhb, gan stró, is saor

Taca ó na réalt
Is an domhan ag rothlú leis
Ar siúl go Rinn Spáinneach
